Fiverr and Contra get dropped into the same “freelance platform” bucket. They do not sell the same product. One is a storefront. A buyer searches, picks a package, pays, and waits for delivery. The other is closer to a public studio page with contracts attached. Same job title on both. Different path to the invoice. That difference decides what you keep, how long a hire takes, and whether you need a crowd of buyers or a few clients who already trust the work.
Quick comparison
| Contra | Fiverr | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Profile, services, contracts, payments | Gig marketplace |
| Seller cut | 0% commission on the invoice | 20% of the order (you keep 80%) |
| Extra costs | Free-plan payment fees; Pro is $29/mo or $199/yr; processor/FX fees | Buyer pays 5.5% + $3.50 on orders under $200 |
| How work starts | Profile, Discover, job applications | Search, Gig packages, custom offers |
| Strength | Keep more of each project | More ready buyers |
| Weak spot | Less catalog demand | The fee never drops |
Two different hiring loops
On Fiverr, the unit of sale is a Gig. Basic, Standard, Premium, extras, done. That is why it still works for logos, edits, short copy, and other jobs a stranger can buy without a call.
On Contra, the unit of sale is you. A public profile, listed services, then a contract with a one-time fee, milestones, or a retainer. Contra’s own jobs page puts it in that workspace: connect, contract, pay, manage the work.
If the client needs a defined deliverable today, Fiverr matches the behavior. If they need to judge a body of work first, Contra does.
The same split shows up when people compare catalog marketplaces with newer models in Upwork vs Sfeerze and in per-minute calls vs fixed-price gigs.
What the fees actually do
Fiverr: sellers receive 80% of the cleared order. $1,000 billed → $800 credited, before withdrawal and currency conversion. Buyers also pay a 5.5% service fee, plus $3.50 when the order is under $200. That buyer load is why a “$50 gig” does not cost the client $50.
Contra: no 20% haircut on the invoice. $1,000 billed is $1,000 owed to you. It is not zero-cost. On Free, Contra’s help center (updated 6 August 2026) lists a $15 platform fee on $500 payments and $29 above $500. Pro waives that. Faster payouts cost 2% on Free. Crypto payouts are 2% on Free, 1% on Pro. Stripe and other processors still charge.
Contra also bills hiring clients $29 per one-time contract, or $29 per month per contractor on ongoing work. That sits on their side of the table, but it can stall a close.
On a $2,500 project, Fiverr’s seller fee is $500. Contra’s listed platform fee on Free is $29. Contra Pro at $199 a year costs less than one mid-size Fiverr commission. Only if the work exists.
Traffic versus take-home
Fiverr sells access to a large catalog. Contra publishes 1.5M+ independents, $250M+ in projects, and 20k+ clients. It does not publish a Fiverr-sized job feed.
So the 0% rate is not a free upgrade. It is a trade: keep more of each contract, find more of the work yourself. Fiverr is the opposite trade.
Off-platform clients belong on Contra, not Fiverr. Fiverr expects the relationship to stay inside Fiverr. Contra is built so you can run a contract through it even if the lead started on your site or in a inbox.

Who should pick which
Fiverr if the service fits a package, you need buyers you do not already have, and 20% is acceptable rent for that traffic.
Contra if the portfolio can close a client, you want the billed amount, and you can live with fewer impulse orders.
Neither, yet if there is no work to show. Contra expects samples. Fiverr still expects a Gig that converts. Starting paths sit in high-paying remote jobs with no experience. Skill choice still moves pay more than the logo on the tab; see highest paying freelance skills in 2026.
A third pattern is paid conversation before a scope exists. That is closer to Sfeerze than to either marketplace: feed for discovery, per-minute calls, escrow when it becomes a job. Wider map: 5 top freelance platforms in 2026.
FAQ
Is Contra commission-free?
It does not take Fiverr’s 20%. Free accounts still have payment fees. Processors and FX are separate. Pro removes Contra’s listed payment and digital-product fees.
Does Fiverr still take 20% in 2026?
Yes. Official freelancer help: sellers get 80% of the cleared payment. Repeat clients do not lower that rate.
How fast can you withdraw?
Fiverr: 14-day clearance after completion; shorter for eligible Top Rated / Pro / Seller Plus accounts. Contra: standard payouts are free; faster payouts are 2% on Free, free on Pro.
Can beginners use Contra?
Only with work samples. Contra says the work does not have to be prior freelance work. It does have to exist.
Should you use both?
Yes, if you sell both SKUs and custom projects. Keep Fiverr for packaged orders. Keep Contra for contracts you do not want to hand a fifth of.
